The Kastelholm area
The picturesque area around Kastelholm is characterized by history and innovation alike.
Here you can find Kastelholm Castle dating back to the late 1300s and the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum illustrating the building traditions of Åland. The area is also home to the prison museum Vita Björn which holds a lot of prison service history within its walls.
If you want to enjoy a good meal, make sure to visit Smakbyn run by the restaurant keeper Michael Björklund. Or why not try some Ålandic apple wine or Ålvados, while admiring a lovely view of the castle.
On the opposite side of the inlet, Ålands Golfklubb’s two high-standard golf courses can be found. There is also a restaurant in the area. Åland’s Photographic Museum, which is privately owned, is located in Tosarby, a mere 3 km from the castle.
There is a guest harbour next to the castle for those who choose to visit Kastelholm by boat. The Kastelholm guesthouse, Klingberg’s cottages and Pengel’s cottages offer accommodation for visitors wishing to spend the night.
Kastelholm is located in the municipality of Sund, a modern municipality full of cultural heritage.
