The Jan Karlsgården Open-Air Museum
A haven of Ålandic traditions, the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum gives the visitor an idea of how life may have been like at a farm on Åland during the late 1800s. Various activities are also arranged here all the year round.
The museum was founded in the 1930s and took its name from the farm Jan Karls in Finström, from where the main building was also moved. Today there are some twenty buildings at Jan Karlsgården, all of which have been brought here from various parts of the Åland islands. In showing the surroundings in which the people of Åland once lived and worked, Jan Karlsgården provides the visitor with a comprehensive view of the life and building traditions that existed here.
During the summer, activity days are arranged, among other things, and ever since the 1940s a traditional midsummer pole has been raised at Jan Karlsgården on Midsummer’s Eve. Lillajulmarknaden, which takes place during the first weekend in December, is the largest Christmas fair on Åland.
